Quick answer: M3U and Xtream Codes are two ways to log the same IPTV subscription into an app. Xtream Codes is a login — server URL, username and password — that delivers Live TV, Movies, Series and the TV guide as separate organised sections. M3U is a single playlist link that loads channels as one flat list, with the guide added separately. For modern apps like IPTV Smarters Pro and TiviMate, use Xtream Codes. For VLC, Kodi and older Smart TVs, use M3U. King IPTV supports both, and your activation email includes what you need for either.

TL;DR

What is the difference between M3U and Xtream Codes?

The difference is structure. An M3U is a plain text playlist — a file listing channel names and stream links, read top to bottom. Xtream Codes is an API: your app asks the server questions (what live channels exist, what is on at 9pm, which episodes of a series are available) and gets structured answers back.

That single difference produces every practical difference between them:

  Xtream Codes M3U
What you enter Server URL + username + password One long playlist URL
Layout Separate Live, Movies and Series sections One flat channel list
TV guide (EPG) Included automatically Added separately as an XMLTV link
Movie and series artwork Posters, descriptions, ratings Usually none
Catch-up TV Supported where the app allows it Generally not
App compatibility Modern IPTV players Almost everything, including VLC
Editing the list yourself Not directly Yes — it is a text file

Which one should you use?

Use Xtream Codes unless something specific pushes you to M3U. For most people on a Firestick, Android TV box or phone, the API login is simply a better experience: the movie and series library becomes browsable instead of buried in a channel list, and the TV guide fills itself in without a second URL.

How do you set up an Xtream Codes login?

Three fields and about two minutes. In IPTV Smarters Pro, TiviMate or a similar player:

  1. Open the app and choose Login with Xtream Codes API (the wording varies slightly by app).
  2. Give the profile a name — anything, it is just a label.
  3. Paste the server URL from your activation email.
  4. Enter your username and password exactly as sent. These are case-sensitive, and a trailing space copied from the email is the single most common cause of a failed login.
  5. Save and wait while the channel list and guide load. The first load takes longest — there is a lot to pull down.

How do you set up an M3U playlist?

Paste one link, then add the guide separately. In VLC: Media → Open Network Stream, paste the M3U URL, press Play. In Kodi or a playlist-based Smart TV app, look for Add playlist or Load playlist URL and paste the same link.

Two things to watch for. First, the EPG is a separate XMLTV link — if your guide is blank, you have loaded the playlist but not the guide. Our guide on fixing a blank IPTV TV guide covers this in detail. Second, do not save the playlist as a local file and load it offline; use the live URL so channel changes on the server reach your app.

Can you use both at the same time?

Yes. The same subscription works through either method, and you can run Xtream Codes on the living room Firestick while using the M3U link in VLC on a laptop. They are two doors into the same house.

The only thing to keep an eye on is how many streams your plan allows at once — that limit applies across both methods, not per method. If several people watch different channels simultaneously, confirm the right plan on the order page or ask 24/7 support first.

Not sure your device is covered? King IPTV works on Firestick, Smart TV (Samsung, LG, Android TV), Android, iPhone and iPad, MAG and Enigma2, and PC or Mac — and you can check the channel line-up before subscribing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Xtream Codes better than M3U?

For most users, yes. Xtream Codes gives you organised Live, Movies and Series sections, an automatic TV guide, artwork and catch-up support. M3U wins only on compatibility — it works in players that do not support the API, such as VLC and older Smart TV apps.

Why is my M3U playlist loading but the TV guide is empty?

Because M3U carries channels only. The guide comes from a separate XMLTV/EPG URL that has to be added in your app settings. Xtream Codes avoids this by bundling the guide with the login.

Does VLC support Xtream Codes?

No. VLC only opens a playlist link, so use the M3U URL there. If you want the full library interface on a PC or Mac, use a dedicated IPTV player instead of VLC.

Can I edit my channel list?

With M3U, yes — it is a text file you can open and trim. With Xtream Codes you cannot edit the source, but most modern players let you hide channels and build favourites inside the app, which achieves the same result more easily.

Where do I find my login details?

They arrive by email immediately after payment — activation is instant. If the email has not shown up, check spam, then contact 24/7 support. You can test the whole setup with the 48-hour trial for $2 before committing to a longer plan.
